Practical color comparisons without rigid rules

I am trying to make a small secondhand work wardrobe feel coherent without replacing everything. My work clothes are mostly secondhand, so finding the right size already limits which colors are available. I would like a few pieces that work together instead of a collection of individually appealing bargains. I already have a charcoal jacket and two cream shirts worth keeping for their fit and usefulness. My next purchase will probably be a knit layer, but I cannot compare every possible shade in person. Would you compare candidate colors with those existing clothes first, or start with how each looks near your face? I am using this as an introduction to personal color analysis though the result needs to help with actual purchases rather than create another list of forbidden shades. What small comparison would you repeat in a shop, and what notes would make the next visit easier?
